One Year Behind the Mask

The world has been living in uncertain times with the outbreak of COVID-19. As a people, we faced a public health crisis that has never been witnessed before in the history of the modern world. COVID-19 struck the world so fast; our lives were challenged, and it was hard to see where hope fits in with the new normal. Yes, there was fear of sickness and even death everywhere. The population was in a panic mode, as little was known of this Coronavirus. You could see empty streets, panic buying in stores and supermarkets.

In a single, ominous strike COVID-19 has killed millions in the world, shut down economies, rendered millions jobless and overseen closure of schools, churches, businesses. Practically, COVID-19 has completely disrupted all spheres of our lives in ways we could not ever have imagined before. The COVID-19 outbreak affected and continues to affect all segments of our population including most vulnerable members of the society, people living in poverty situations, older persons, persons with disabilities, youth, teachers, health care workers, students among others.

One year ago, in efforts to control the spread of COVID-19, the Kenyan government rolled out dozens of measures designed at keeping people safe. These included simple good hygiene measures such as thoroughly washing hands with soap and water, using hand sanitizers, wearing facemasks in public, keeping a 1.5m social distance to most dire measures such as the 7pm to 5am curfew, closure of schools, churches and bars, working from home directives and limitation of inter-county movements among others. The last one year has not been as we expected; but we have found new ways to stay connected, to learn something new and to stay positive.

It is understandable for people to despair in turbulent times like these especially when the livelihoods are on the line. This pandemic may have cancelled our usual normal but it never cancelled love, hope and kindness in us. With the arrival of vaccine shipment and commencement of vaccination, I call upon every Kenyan to take part in the fight against Covid-19 by continuing to observe the measures. Do not let your guard down; we are not yet out of this pandemic. Use your vigour to heal a wounded economy, fight misinformation about vaccine, spreading messages of hope in your communities. Finally, let us support our health workers, aid workers and the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Behind the mask, someone was leading the way.

Behind the mask, someone had your six.

Behind the mask, someone cared for you.

Behind the mask, keep the hope.

The 46th President of the US, [President Biden] would say "Help is on the way!" and the first help is the covid-19 vaccine.
