How much Rainfall is extreme?

Again, how much rain is considered an extreme amount depends on how much rain a particular area normally sees.

However, it's either a heavy amount of rain in a very short period of time or a prolonged period of rain.

Extreme rainfall can lead to flooding - including flash floods, which are caused by a short burst of heavy rain.

And while many factors contribute to flooding, a warming atmosphere caused by climate change makes extreme rainfall more likely, because a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapour that then rains out.

About 120 people died in Germany after floods caused by heavy rain.
Because of human-induced climate change, extreme weather events are becoming both more severe and more frequent.

In China's central Henan province, for example, more than 300 people were killed and almost 13 million others were affected by floods that engulfed the region at the end of July 2021.

And just a week earlier, western Europe saw its worst flooding in decades. About 120 people died after heavy rainfall hit Germany and Belgium, while the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Switzerland were also badly affected.
