What you need to know about the 2021 COP26 to be held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, UK

The 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), is the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference. It will be held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, between Sunday, 31 October and Friday, 12 November 2021; under the presidency of the United Kingdom, Alok Sharma as the President. 

Under the Paris Agreement, members submitted nationally determined contributions. These pledges will limit their greenhouse gas emissions. The Paris Agreement framework outlines that each member state is expected to submit enhanced nationally determined contributions every five years, to increase ambition to mitigate climate change. The Paris Agreement was signed at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

Here's what you need to know about COP26

In attendance will be more than 40,000 people from world leaders to NGOs, lobbyists, businesses, journalists and negotiators who will convene in Glasgow to discuss climate change. 

The COP26 will start on 31 October and end on 12 November. 

The COP26 was scheduled for last year, but the Covid-19 pandemic delayed it. 

The COP26 schedule of events 

  • 30-31 October: G20 leaders to convene in Rome. 

Bullet point: To look for climate pledges from China, India, and Saudi Arabia. More climate cash from France and Italy. A G20 communiqué reaffirming the 1.5C goal. 

  • 1-2 November: World Leaders Summit opens COP26.  

Bullet point: Speeches from world leaders will focus more on climate action. 

  • 4 November: Energy Day, where some world leaders will be advocating to “make coal history”. 

Bullet point: To lookout for new signatories to the United Nation’s No New Coal pact. 

  • 5 November: Youth and public empowerment day. 

Bullet point: Lobbyists and climate activists to protest for more climate action. 

  • 10 November: Transport day, with a focus on cutting carbon from cars. 

Bullet point: United Kingdom PM, Boris Johnson will hope for new national bans on petrol and diesel car sales. 

  • 12 November: Negotiations are due to end. 

Bullet point: A negotiated agreement shall be released.
