Pakistan faces a period of deal-making after election results showed no clear majority.

Independent candidates loyal to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan defied expectations to take the lead.

Both Imran Khan and his main rival, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif declare victory in the election.

Candidates linked to jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s political party are in the lead in Pakistan’s election, ahead of two dynastic parties believed to be favoured by the military, as vote counting enters its final leg.

PTI interim chief Gohar Ali Khan says the party will try to form a government as it is by far the largest political party in the National Assembly.

Imran Khan’s PTI candidates were forced to run as independents after the Election Commission (pressured by the military) barred them from using the party symbol – a cricket bat – to help illiterate voters find them on ballots.

The election was marred by violence by armed groups and a widely criticised suspension of mobile phone services that prompted accusations of political engineering.

Latest results:

Independents (including those affiliated with Imran Khan's PTI) – 100
PMLN – 73
PPP – 54
Others – 29
Announced: 256
Postponed: 1
Remaining: 9

Friday Updates:

Pakistan election early results show PMLN, PPP and PTI-affiliated candidates fighting a close battle.

Results started to trickle in nearly 12 hours after polling for national and provincial assemblies ended on Thursday.

The polls were marred by violence by armed groups and a widely criticised suspension of mobile phone services that prompted accusations of “political engineering”.

At least 12 people were killed and 39 wounded nationwide during attacks aimed at disrupting the vote, the military says.
