How We Can Fight Corruption in Kenya: A Citizen’s Guide to Accountability and Change

Corruption in Kenya is not just a problem, it’s a pandemic. It’s in the DNA of too many politicians, public servants, and privileged citizens who think they are above the law. From embezzled funds to rigged tenders and job opportunities, the system is rigged against honesty and merit. But here’s the truth: change begins with us. 

Here is how we, the people can take action: 

1. Educate Ourselves and Speak Up 

Corruption thrives in the shadows. Let’s learn how it operates and share that knowledge. A well-informed citizenry is a threat to corrupt elites. We can talk to our communities, post on social media, and start conversations that challenge complacency. 

2. Demand Accountability 

We must never stay silent. Let’s attend public forums, question leaders, and demand transparency. Support and call for independent anti-corruption institutions like the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and civil society watchdogs, this strengthens our collective voice. Silence enables corruption; together, we expose it. 

3. Vote for Integrity, Not Influence

Every election is our choice. We must reject candidates with shady histories, even if they have money or popularity. Let’s elect leaders who show integrity, transparency, and a commitment to public service. Our votes are more powerful than any bribe. 

4. Use the Law 

We must know our rights. Let’s report corruption cases, no matter how small. Institutions like the EACC exist to act on complaints, but they can only act if we act first by exposing those who are complicit. Even one well-documented report or trending online expose can trigger investigations. 

5. Strengthen Civic Participation 

We can join community advocacy groups and campaign for open budgeting, transparent tenders, and accessible public project information. By publicly pressuring officials, we shine a light where corruption hides. 

6. Leverage Technology 

We have tools at our fingertips. Mobile apps, social media, and online platforms allow us to expose corruption safely. Transparency isn’t just about government portals, it’s about us holding power to account. 

7. Lead by Example 

Integrity starts with each of us. Let’s say no to bribes, nepotism, or cutting corners. Every ethical choice weakens the culture of corruption. When we act honestly and seriously, we inspire others to do the same.

Kenya’s youth are carrying struggles heavier than we deserve, yet our spirit remains unbroken. In the face of hardship, despair, and suppression, we still believe in the power of our voices. This is a message of hope, and a reminder that our future is still ours to claim.

In Struggle, Where Do We Find Hope? 

Though the youth of Kenya face struggles we should never have to, we refuse to doubt the power of our voices ahead of 2027. 

Every day, we see it. Prices go up. Jobs are scarce. Corruption gets its way. Promises made to us are broken before the ink dries. Instead of being empowered, we are dismissed or lied to. Instead of being included, we are silenced or killed. And instead of leadership, we are handed excuses and more lies. 

But here’s the truth, this story doesn’t end in despair — it begins with us. 

Kenya’s youth make up the largest share of this nation’s population. We are the workers, the students, the dreamers, the hustlers, the builders of tomorrow. They may suppress our voices, but they cannot erase our numbers, our energy, or our vision. 

Why They Fear Us 

Politicians know one thing: if the youth unite, the game changes forever. That is why they try to keep us tired, hopeless, and distracted. They hand out quick coins, not opportunities. They spread propaganda, not solutions. They want us to believe our voices don’t matter. 

But history proves them wrong. From independence struggles to modern revolutions across Africa and beyond, it has always been the young people who ignite change. 

Our Struggle Is Not Permanent 

Yes, we are struggling today. Yes, life feels heavier than it should. But remember this: hardship is never permanent. The oppressors of today will not last forever. Leaders who lie, exploit, and ignore the people eventually fall, ALWAYS. 

What remains is the voice of the people. And in Kenya, that voice is increasingly youthful, bold, and unafraid. 

Ahead of 2027 

The next election is not just a date on the calendar. It is our chance to decide whether we continue to suffer or rise to claim the future we deserve. Between now and then, we must do three things: 

1. Stay Awake – Don’t let lies, bribes, or handouts fool us. Eat their coins if you must, but don’t sell your future. 
2. Stay United – Tribe, class, or background doesn’t matter. What matters is the shared struggle we face as youth. 
3. Stay Loud – Keep speaking, protesting, creating, posting, writing, singing. Every word adds weight to the WanTam movement. 

The Message of Hope 

To every young Kenyan reading this WanTam Weekly Edition, you are not powerless. You are not invisible. And you are not alone. 

Your frustrations are valid. Your dreams are valid. And your voice is powerful enough to change this country. 

The road to 2027 will not be easy, but it is ours to walk together. Let them underestimate us. Let them doubt us. Let's eat their handouts. But when the time comes, let them hear us roar like thunder.

Africa’s renewed hope for Development, Prosperity and global Power, ahead of BRICS Summit

What to know about the three-day BRICS meeting (Jul 24-Jul 26): 

Currently, top national security officials and senior diplomats from the BRICS bloc and other invited countries are in Johannesburg, South Africa for a three-day meeting. 

The purpose of this meeting is to have in-depth exchange of views on hotspot issues including Russia-Ukraine conflict and other global security issues of common concern, which would serve as political preparations for the leaders' summit in August. 

The meeting, which is scheduled to last from Monday to Wednesday, is chaired by South Africa's national security advisor Sydney Mufamadi, and is part of a series of BRICS meetings taking place ahead of the BRICS Summit in South Africa from August 22 to 24.  

Aside from the BRICS member states, delegates representing a record 45 countries are also joining the three-day dialogue. 

Senior finance, diplomacy and security officials from BRICS member states traditionally meet in advance to exchange views and hold detailed cooperation in preparation for the leaders' summit. 

The Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security is an important platform for BRICS countries to carry out political and security cooperation. 

The three-day meeting will help BRICS countries coordinate stances on major global security issues, practice true multilateralism and promote global peace. 

Topics covering traditional and non-traditional security threats, the Ukraine crisis, anti-terrorism and cyber security will be high on the summit's agenda. 

The wider topics covered by the BRICS meetings as well as the growing interest of more countries in joining the mechanism underscore the bigger role it is playing in global governance. 

What to know about the BRICS Summit (Aug 22- Aug 24): 

This year's summit in South Africa has attracted high attention as it is the first offline gathering of BRICS leaders for the past three years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It's a milestone in the growth of the multilateral mechanism. 

South Africa has invited the heads of state of all African countries to the summit, which will discuss how BRICS countries can partner with Africa to help the continent achieve economic growth. 

With the wider attendance of African countries, more focus will be put on how to further encourage cooperation between BRICS and Africa. 

Additionally, how BRICS bloc can help implement free trade agreements in Africa and how developing countries can achieve social and economic development in the post-COVID era are expected to be discussed. 

Importantly, more developing countries and new emerging economies, which have played a significant role in regional and global affairs, have expressed interest in joining the BRICS bloc, making the expansion of the mechanism important to the global governance system. 

Discussions on expanding BRICS are expected to be high on the agenda for this week meeting as well as for the upcoming summit in August. 

More countries, especially developing countries are getting increasingly disappointed with the US and the West abuse of the current international governance and financial system for hegemonic ends. 

The BRICS' increasing attractiveness lies in its bigger role in building consensus, and more countries are seeking to join it to coordinate and work to solve problems that concern them, which worries the West led by the US. 

The BRICS bloc is leading developing countries away from the West, especially when it comes to efforts to dump the US dollar. 

Since its inception, the BRICS bloc has focused on cooperation among developing countries and not creating confrontations, which is why it has won the support of developing countries that are victims of geopolitical tricks. 

BRICS has never had the intention of being a counterweight to the West, nor will it pull together small cliques. The deeper reason behind why the West seeks to smear the mechanism is their fear of developing countries' efforts in seeking the right to speak up in international affairs. 

It is worth to note that the summit in South Africa, next month, will let the whole world see the strength of BRICS, with developing countries focusing on promoting economic development, encouraging trade and finance cooperation to make a greater contribution to global recovery and prosperity. 

Why is BRICS bloc very important for Africa: 

China and Africa are strengthening their relations, showing developing nations that it is possible and sustainable to have mutually beneficial cooperation between developing countries, there is an appetite in Africa for partnerships of equality. 

The long-term stable China-Africa relationship continues to bear fruit for Africa, for it is China that first floated the idea of expanding BRICS to include more member countries when it chaired the BRICS group in 2022. 

Ahead of next month BRICS summit, about 40 nations have expressed the desire to become members including countries in the Middle East, Latin America and Africa. South Africa's representative to BRICS has confirmed that the number is set to increase. 

For African countries, BRICS is no longer an alternative model to the G7 Western economic model, but the economic representation of the dreams and aspirations of an ambitious Africa. 

Through BRICS, Africa seeks to move from the periphery to the epicenter of decision-making and chart a viable development path for its people. 

With the expansion, BRICS will become a bigger and better economic space for the Global South community. It is therefore an economic model that prioritizes a win-win cooperation, delivering benefits for all involved, just like the China-Africa relations. 

China has held strong the position of Africa's largest trading partner for 14 consecutive years. During this period the continent has recorded exponential growth and development. 

What makes BRICS an attractive development model for developing countries in Africa are the same reasons that have made China a much-valued development partner: A non-interference policy in the sovereign affairs of its development partners is a particularly important aspect of the profile of the development partner that Africa is keen to align with. 

APOCALYPTIC: Devastating Earthquake Ripped through Turkey and Syria, leaving destruction, over 2,300 deaths and debris on each side of the border

At least 2,300 people have died and rescuers are racing to pull survivors from beneath the rubble after a devastating earthquake ripped through Turkey and Syria, leaving destruction and debris on each side of the border.

One of the strongest earthquakes to hit the region in a century shook residents from their beds early in the morning on Monday, sending tremors as far away as Lebanon and Israel. 

In Turkey, at least 1,498 people have died and several thousand were injured, according to the country’s Disaster and Emergency Management Agency (AFAD). 

In neighboring Syria, at least 820 have died. According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, 430 people have died across government-controlled areas, mostly in the regions of Aleppo, Hama, Latakia, and Tartus. The “White Helmets” group, officially known as the Syria Civil Defense, reported 390 deaths in opposition-controlled areas. Much of northwestern Syria, which borders Turkey, is controlled by anti-government forces amid a bloody civil war that began in 2011. 

The epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude quake was 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi, in Turkey’s Gaziantep province, at a depth of 24.1 kilometers, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

A series of aftershocks have reverberated throughout the day. The largest, a major quake that measured 7.5 in magnitude, struck in Turkey, according to the USGS about nine hours after the initial quake. That aftershock hit around 95 kilometers north of the original.

Video from the scene in Turkey showed day breaking over rows of collapsed buildings, some with apartments exposed to the elements as people huddled in the freezing cold beside them, waiting for help.

A host of countries have sent rescue workers to help the stricken region, where a colossal effort to find and free trapped civilians is underway. A cold and wet weather system is moving through the region, further hampering that challenge. 

Monday’s quake is believed to be the strongest to hit Turkey since 1939, when an earthquake of the same magnitude killed 30,000 people, according to the USGS. Earthquakes of this magnitude are rare, with fewer than five occurring each year on average, anywhere in the world. Seven quakes with magnitude 7.0 or greater have struck Turkey in the past 25 years – but Monday’s is the most powerful. 

Search and rescue teams have been dispatched to the south of the country, Turkey’s interior minister, Suleyman Soylu, said. AFAD, the disaster agency, said it had requested international help through the Emergency Response Coordination Centre (ERCC), the European Union’s humanitarian program.

Nearly 1,000 search and rescue volunteers have been deployed from Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul, along with dogs, trucks and aid, according to its governor, Ali Yerlikaya.

The World Health Organization has activated its network of emergency medical teams in the two countries to assist those affected by the earthquake, the organization’s director-general tweeted. Erdogan also said in his televised address that NATO, the European Union and dozens of other countries had offered to help.
