Anti Corruption Starts from You

Before commencing my article, I would like to ask you a query. I am sure you just love to watch new movies on first day. When you go to a theater, and find that there are no tickets, what do you do? You buy a ticket in black, paying Ksh.100 for a ticket when it actually costs Ksh. 80? This shows the level of corruption in our country.

First of all, what is corruption? Corruption, in one form or another, is a worldwide phenomenon. It is an unprofessional practice which is used by a person to gain advantage over others.  Disastrously, corruption has become a part of life in our country.  It has given its entrance in the very roots of the Kenya society. Today, corruption is one of the extreme factors holding up development and stifling the realization of democracy. Corruption influences the advancement of a nation adversely. It scale downs income of the government, and builds disparities in distribution of income and wealth. Corruption affects a nation’s development, Socially, Economically and politically. Our ministers, people, police and officers most of them are corrupt.  Most politician are corrupt.

Corruption may come in many forms, often in Sports and Politics. Politicians on regular basis have been found guilty of corruption, as with sports persons. Politicians use unfair techniques to gain recognition in an election, to gain more money, to gain votes etc. Corruption is in the police force, in management of the Olympic Games and even in the law and order. The infamous episode of match-fixing in cricket was also a case of corruption. Corruption is in hospitals, education, job, government offices, nothing is left of corruption. Today everything has become a business for acquiring money in wrong way. Educational institutions are also connected with corruption and they give seat to those students only who have paid for, whether they are good students with good marks or not. Very weak students are given admission in the top colleges and universities only on the basis of money paid for wrong admission and the topper student with good marks and lack of money gets back in the life or take admission in any simple college. Similar is the case with sports persons caught using drugs. Corruption creates an unfavorable atmosphere. Detrimental corruption does not bring about any good, As Shakespeare said,”The best things corrupted become the worst.”

Everyone has forgotten the absolute importance of being a human only because of the money. We have to recognize that money is not everything and it is not durable. We cannot carry it forever to us, it can only give us corruption and greediness. As a Kenyan citizen we need to give importance to the value based life and not money based life. I do accept that we need lot of money to live a common life however it is not true that just for our selfishness.

It is our responsibility to select very Impartial and authentic leaders to lead our Kenya just like in countries like Singapore and Malaysia etc. Only such political leaders can finally end the corruption from the top of the government. Youths of the country should also need to be conscious of all the reasons of corruption and assemble to solve it in a group. Increasing level of the corruption needs to take some heavy steps to get control over it.
