Developing and sharing common interests and hobbies can decrease conflict in relationships during this COVID-19 pandemic

There is nothing wrong with couples having different likes and dislikes based on their unique personalities, experiences and talents. It would be a serious mistake, however, for each of the couple to assume that every moment of free time should be relegated to their own interests. When was the last time you thought about your partner as your friend—someone you enjoy spending time with and with whom you can engage in mutually satisfying pursuits? If people have a firm grasp of their roles as partners, lovers, or parents, but fail to understand what it means to be friends, they are missing a key component of relationship.

Everyone could use a hobby. After all, hobbies provide a great sense of purpose and fun at home. It is an awesome way to pass time and help bring you closer as a couple. Developing common interests and hobbies can decrease conflict in relationships and strengthen the idea that you and your partner are a team. There are great activities, which can help you deepen your sense of intimacy, connection and friendship.

Here are a few activities you could develop and share with your partner at home:

  • Taking a walk

It is a great way to recharge your relationship, it returns you refreshed and invigorated and hopeful that you can establish new patterns to avoid being sucked back into the humdrum of everyday living. However, because of the lock down, with your partner you can take a short distance walk near your home.

  • Jogging

For partners who are in shape or trying to get there, jogging can be exciting and provide time to bond together.

  • Yoga

Yoga encourages mindfulness, which in turn allows for deeper emotional connection. In addition, it is great for your body and easy to practice at home. It involve sharing and chilling to your favorite music.

  • Music and Dance

Even if you do not consider yourself a great dancer, learning a new style of dance together can improve teamwork. In order to master a new dance move, you have to work together and be responsive to your partner. Learning together will provide a way for you to not only learn a new skill, but practice making something beautiful together. A friend of mine taught me some basic Salsa dance; it is the best dance style to try with your partner at home. You can find Salsa dance videos from YouTube.

  • Outdoor activities

Enjoy the great outdoors activities and test your limits together. This will boosts the confidence of each of you, while also improving trust, as you have to trust your partner with your life. Spice things up by getting out of your daily comfort zone. Do something that conquers your fears and gives you an adrenaline rush. This will help you create lasting memories with just the two of you.

  • Photography

If you have a great camera or a phone, it is time to be creative about capturing your lives together. It is fun to take amazing photos or videos while at home.

  • Charity

Volunteer together for a charity near and dear to your hearts, like donating face masks and food to the vulnerable households. This is the best choice because not only does it bring you closer together by spending time doing a meaningful activity, but also it provides gratitude and perspective when you give back to an important cause.

  • Appreciate Art

Absorbing a little culture together can be one of the most exhilarating hobbies for couples. Whether you are in the city or upcountry, try to appreciate new arts together. Learning about different cultures together will help you become a more enriched partners.

  • Cycling

Most people I know are into cycling these days, being able to ride distances with your partner enables the two of you to exercise and share the experience of being together in a different environment. Take advantage of a beautiful ride in your neighborhood.

  • Sex

Another activity is SEX; you get it. If you are romantically involved then this is one of the hobbies; you are probably already doing. However, the next time you engage, keep the benefits at the top of your mind. Like exercise, sex can be very much a hobby. It burns calories, makes you feel great, and is one of the best ways to bring you closer together, both physically and emotionally. Make a commitment to setting aside time each week to try new things, experiment, and maybe even spend all afternoon in bed.

  • Meditation

When you meditate together, it encourages balance, peace and harmony. It is as beneficial for your relationship as it is for your mind.

  • Gaming

Most people say gaming is left to bachelors. Research shows that playing games can reduce stress, and if you find a game interesting for both of you—whether it involves race cars or conquering each other on the battlefield—it can be an awesome way to relax and unwind.

  • Self-care

Treating yourself together can be the perfect way to relax and recharge. Figure out a self-care routine that works for both of you, and regularly set aside time to indulge in to. Try the regular side-by-side foot massages. Learn how to oil each other up, hit pressure points, and improve sexual energy between the two of you.

  • Indoor designs

Arranging the house, painting the walls, hanging favorite wall charts and photos, designing a room, or building something is a great way to be together while working on a common goal you can both feel good about. Just make sure that the project you take on is a manageable one in order to ensure the work you are doing together stays fun and does not get too stressful.

  • Solving puzzles

This hobby has many benefits and is easy to do no matter where you are. Crossword puzzles encourage physical closeness and intellectual stimulation. There is lots of laughter when things go awry.

  • Gardening

Gardening together will help you grow and create something beautiful. It gives each partner responsibility and is an activity to get you outside together away from all other distractions. Whether it is planting flowers or growing a vegetable garden, it will help you grow as a couple. This activity works for those who owns a garden.

  • Raising kids

Having and raising children is one of the most bonding experiences for couples. Being a parent ups the importance you feel as an individual, and knowing that you and your partner are mom and dad, or dad and dad, or mom and mom really creates a team spirit unmatched by any other hobby.

  • Cooking

Who does not love eating? Cooking together is a fun and sensual way to reconnect; spending time in the kitchen creating a meal that you both have planned and shopped for is a great couple’s activity. Make it a playful and fun evening using fresh ingredients, wine, and music. Creating something delicious together puts you in a great mood.

  • Movie

Having a movie night with your partner at home during this pandemic is a great way to spent time together. Watching your favorite movies is an easy and inexpensive recreational activity. Movies strengthen emotional bonds, build tradition and promote family togetherness.

Finally, whatever you do together, do it with a loving heart and a cooperative demeanor. Be creative, be polite, have a good attitude, complement one another and be affectionate—hold hands, cuddle and steal kisses.
