Lula da Silva wins the runoff to be the next Brazil President 

Brazilians went to the polls on Sunday, to elect the next president in one of the most polarizing election in the country's democratic history. 

  • Polls opened Sunday in Brazil’s presidential election runoff between the leftist former president Lula da Silva and the far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro. 
  • Voting continued until 5 p.m. in Brazil’s capital, Brasilia, with the country’s electronic ballot system confirming results about two hours after the voting closes. 
  • Neither Lula or Bolsonaro attained atleast 50% of the votes required in the first round on October 2, forcing today’s runoff poll. 
  • Lula finished ahead in the initial contest, earning about 5 percent points, more than Bolsonaro. However, the incumbent Bolsonaro performed better than predicted by most pollsters. 
  • Brazil has more over 150 million people eligible to vote in the election; voting is mandatory in the country for all people between 18 and 70 years of age. 
  • Mr. Lula voted early Sunday morning at a public school in the São Paulo metro Area, while his riral Mr. Bolsonaro casted his ballot in Marechal Hermes district, Rio de Janeiro. 
  • The election comes amid a polarized political climate in Brazil. 
  • The country is currently struggling with high inflation, limited growth and rising poverty. 
  • Recent polls found that 52% of Brazilians would vote for Lula, while 48% would pick Bolsonaro.
