The International Court of Justice (ICJ) delivers its first ruling on the emergency measures requested by South Africa in its genocide case against Israel over its war on the Gaza Strip. You can watch the proceedings live here.

The provisional measures include a request for Israel to suspend its military operations in the Gaza Strip.

The judges will not rule on the merits of the genocide allegations, which may take years to decide.

Since October 7, Israel’s military campaign has massacred at least 30,000 civilians and wounded more than 70,000 others, according to officials in Gaza. Thousands more are missing under the rubble, most of them presumed dead.

ICJ president lists statements by Israeli officials on ‘dehumanising language’

On the issue of “dehumanising language” used against Palestinians, the ICJ president says the court has taken note of a number of statements made by senior Israeli officials.

 

It particularly called attention to statements by Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in ordering a “complete siege” of Gaza and telling troops that they are fighting against “human animals”.
