Today in Wuhan, thousands of high school students are going
back to school after 4 months of staying at home. Wuhan city, Hubei province is
the original epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chinese city was placed under total lockdown in January 2020 to control the spread of the coronavirus. Nobody was allowed into or out of the city for at least 90 days. The movement within the city itself was limited. The lockdown restrictions were lifted mid of April; borders and roads were opened, domestic travels into and out of the city resumed, businesses reopened, etc.

Senior high school students arriving at school in Wuhan city, May 6, 2020 |
According to Hubei province authorities, 83 high schools and 38 vocational schools in Wuhan are reopening today; 58,000 students will return to classes. The high school seniors are the first group to return, as they need to prepare for China’s university entry examination, popularly known as “gaokao”. These exams are done each year on June 7-8, but it has been postponed to July 7-8 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The rest of the students will slowly resume studies in phases.
Before today, a series of special measures were in place to safely welcome senior students. These measures include: dividing classes into smaller sizes/units, arranging desks at 1.5metres distance apart, minimizing oral communication, staggering time for students leaving school, mandatory use of facemasks, limiting sharing of learning materials and sanitizing amongst others. In addition, the school environment had been disinfected and cleaned since the end of April.
Many schools have installed infrared ray temperature measuring instruments to check the temperatures of students, teachers and workers.
