It's 2025 and any Kenyan knows what is it like to live under a Pharaoh

Pharaoh is the personification of evil, despotic rule that denies and defies God. For my readers, this includes societal systems that keep the powerful in power and everyone else in their place.

If the Egyptians are the haves and the Israelites the have-nots, then yes, we belong in a gold chariot, moving through the world in a bubble of protection and privilege.

According to Exodus 15, Pharaoh was in direct opposition to God. Pharaoh and his team boasted of the ways they would hurt God’s people. Clearly, Pharaoh is termed as God’s enemy.

If you read the story of Pharaoh and Israelites in Egypt, you will agree with me that Ruto is exactly an embodiment of Pharaoh. He has been called Zakayo, Judas, Pharisee, Ceaser, and other biblical names but today I want to illustrate how Ruto is the Pharaoh of today.

Pharaoh was determined to keep the Israelites under his rule, exploiting them as a labor force and refusing to set them free. Despite countless pleas and warnings, he hardened his heart, abducting and killing many in his quest to maintain power. However, God, through Moses and Aaron, intervened to deliver the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt, guiding them toward the Promised Land.

In a strikingly similar manner, President William Ruto seems to be following in Pharaoh’s footsteps. His political allies, often referred to as his loyal “praise team,” appear to harbor disdain toward the very people they claim to serve.
Their rhetoric has turned hostile, with threats to manipulate the 2027 elections should Kenyans refuse to grant Ruto a second term. These allies boldly hint at rigging the votes to ensure he remains in power, disregarding the democratic will of the people.

Kenyans, however, have grown weary—tired of Ruto’s ubiquitous presence, his unfulfilled promises, and the empty words that have come to define his tenure.
Yet, just as the Israelites eventually saw the light at the end of their dark journey, so too will Kenyans. The end of his term is drawing near, and the people’s resolve for change grows stronger by the day. One term is enough, and the time for true liberation is on the horizon.
