Nairobi- On Wednesday, a ship carrying consignments of white maize, sorghum and wheat docked at the Mombasa port.

The government has allowed importers to ship in the grains to ease a shortage of the cereals in the country and avert a food crisis.

In the next few months, the price of flour is expected to come down to about Ksh.140 from the current price of Ksh.180.

A manifest from the Kenya Ports Authority shows that the Stellina ship docked at the port on Wednesday with 21,500 metric tonnes of white maize from Mozambique.

The KPA manifest also indicated that 22,800 metric tonnes of sorghum arrived on Wednesday on a Giorgos Confidence Ship from the United States.

Kenya also received 28,000 metric tonnes of wheat at the Mombasa port from Canada on a vessel known as Ability.

In a statement released by the KPA, the three commodities all docked on Wednesday evening.

According to Kenya Ports Authority, all the vessels would dock at a berth owned and operated by the Grain Bulk Handlers.

The KPA manifest showed the consignment was onboard an African Merlin vessel.

The Kenya Kwanza administration has would allow the importation of 10 million bags of maize in the next six months to address the current shortage of maize, which has kept the price of flour at Ksh 180.

The Cabinet secretary for Trade, Hon. Moses Kuria said the import of grains would be shipped in by the private sector.

Kenya has been importing thousands of tonnes of wheat in the last few months as millers rush to replenish the diminishing stocks amid poor harvest from last season.

The import of grains comes at a time the world is grappling with a shortage of wheat following the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has cut the supply of grains for a year now.
